From Tragedy to Triumph: The Story of the Daou Brothers
DAOU was established in 2007 by two brothers, Georges and Daniel Daou. Theirs is an inspiring tale of the American Dream, starting with a heartbreaking chapter in Lebanon. When they were small boys, a bomb exploded on the street outside their house, and both brothers, along with their sisters, Marie Jo and Michelle, were gravely injured. After months in the hospital, they were finally allowed to return home.
“When something happens like that, you learn not to be afraid of anything,” said Georges. “My brother, Daniel, and I have a trauma bond, and we have always helped one another to achieve our dreams.”

Part of their dream was to establish a winery. This inspiration came when their parents emigrated from war-torn Lebanon to France. Before moving to Provence, the family lived in Paris, where the brothers were immersed in food and wine. Georges remembers how much his father enjoyed savoring a beautiful Bordeaux.
To finance their dream of owning a winery, the two brothers pursued an education in America. Little did they know that this would be just the beginning for them! Both Georges and Daniel graduated from U.C. San Diego, where they studied Electrical Engineering and Computer Engineering. Shortly after college, they launched DAOU Systems, a networking technology company for the healthcare industry. It sold in 1997.
Planting Roots in Paso Robles
The brothers searched for the best place to start their winery. First, they considered France and Italy, but eventually struck gold when they discovered the Adelaida District, one of the few places in California with calcareous soil, a combination of limestone and clay found in some of the most excellent Bordeaux and Burgundy vineyards.

“When I first laid eyes on the mountain in Paso Robles, I knew immediately that this was it,” said Daniel. The region had the exact soil, slopes, climate, and elevation they sought.

“We started planting DAOU Mountain in 2007. At the time, Cabernet Sauvignon from Paso Robles was not well-recognized, despite every indication that our soils and climate had vast potential. However, we believed in it from the beginning. As a result, one of our proudest achievements has been to champion the now worldwide reputation of outstanding Cabernet and other Bordeaux varieties from our region.”

Taste What Makes DAOU Extraordinary
Georges and Daniel believe the mountain is a source of power, transforming everyday raindrops and roots into extraordinary wines that unite friends for decades.

They want each guest’s experience at DAOU to be as memorable as their vintages – where everyone leaves feeling like part of the family!
Life is all about finding and sharing your gift for these two brothers. By collaborating, they have crafted a vibrant mosaic of possibilities – offering consumers the chance to dream up and experience an unforgettable journey through wine.

“I believe that America is the only country in the world today to challenge us to live our dreams,” said Georges. “American consumers inspire companies to constantly strive for more; Daniel and I have experienced this throughout our careers. We make great wines for our consumers, and in return, they keep making our journey as winegrowers a dream come true.”
