Inside the Rhine House at Beringer Vineyards: A Victorian Estate Preserved for 150 Years in Napa Valley

By Published On: March 24th, 2026

Completed in 1884, the 17-room Rhine House was built by founder Frederick Beringer as a replica of his childhood home along Germany’s Rhine River.

More than a century later, it remains one of Napa Valley’s most intact examples of Victorian residential architecture — largely untouched in spirit and design and carefully preserved rather than reinvented.

In recent years, the estate underwent an extensive, preservation-first restoration designed to strengthen and protect the original structure while maintaining its historic integrity.

Highlights include:

Conservation of 41 original 19th-century-stained glass panels, including hand-painted and enameled glass with jeweled borders and signed details — restored using museum-level cleaning, re-leading, and stabilization techniques.

As Napa continues to evolve, the Rhine House stands as a rare example of heritage preserved at scale — not just as a landmark, but as a living architectural testament to one of the region’s founding wineries. In honor of the anniversary year, Beringer has also introduced a limited architecture-focused tour of the estate, offering visitors a chance to experience the preservation work firsthand.
